Pokemon is a hugely popular children's fantasy franchise, with cute yet savage beasts that the children control.  They do this using collectible trading cards. This would be a great idea for a schoolage childs birthday party, particularly for boys from the ages of 5 to 10 years who love pokemon.

A Pokemon themed party has many opportunities to create special invitations. You could go the extra mile and customise a different pokemon monster for each invitee, and use that as the invitation. Or perhaps create the birthday boy or girl as a pokemon, with special abilities.
