Japan is a country steeped in culture and culture. Strict social codes are surrounded by reinforcing rituals. Samurai and Geisha, the way of old Japan. Techno and neon, the way of the new Japan.

This party supplies blog post will mostly be concerned with old Japanese culture, style and etiquette. This is why we chose the Japanese hanging lanterns picture. When we think of Japan, some think of the Samurai Warrior. Others the Geisha and the tea ceremony. Still others, the temples, the ninja, and beautiful glyphic writing on rice paper.

All of these elements can be combined with this ancient oriental civilisation to create a truly magnificent themed party with but a little effort.

We will start with invitations. Party invitations to a Japanese themed party or birthday should ideally be written in Japanese. With a translation for the Gaijin, naturally. If not, then a deep red, and written on rice paper - this might give the guests and idea of what to expect.

When it comes to sourcing party supplies for your Japanese themed party, lanterns, bamboo screenings, incense, and tori gates are a good idea. You could create a magica pathway from your front gate to your front door in this way.

The host and hostess could greet guests in Kimono, and provide these for every visitor. Of course, as is the Japanese way, dont forget to provide your guests with sandals, so they can leave their shoes at the door.

Gentle music should be playing. One of our preferences is Kitaro, but there are other, equally suitable, modern Japanese artists. A gentle music will greatly enhance the atmosphere.

Perhaps the last consideration is your internal party decorations, and party food. Japan has many iconic images, such as Mt Fuji, cherry blossoms, and of course, for those with a more agressive nature, the Rising Sun or perhaps some martial arts themed images. These would all make very good Japanese themed party decorations.

As to party food ideas, well this is easy. Fish, rice and sauce. Any number of dishes can be made using any variety of fishes. Its a bit more complex than that but you get the picture? And chopsticks. Chopsticks. Dont for get the chopsticks but do offer your guests the knife and fork option out of courtesy!
